PVC and PVDC are commonly used in the packaging of a variety of food products, including meat, dairy, and baked goods, due to their excellent barrier properties and ability to extend the shelf life of food. However, concerns have been raised about the potential release of harmful chemicals, such as vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, into food from these materials.
To investigate these concerns, NIST researchers measured the levels of these chemicals in food samples that had been packaged in PVC/PVDC materials.
